Bearing Fruit

"I [Jesus] am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you." John 15: 1–3

I do not claim to know much about farming or gardens; however, I have known many people who were really good at it. One such person was my late wife’s father, Vito, who knew a lot about growing things. He had a huge lot on his property in Ashtabula, Ohio where he generally put in a very large garden, until his health slowed him down.

He loved seeing things grow and of course grew more then he could use, thus always gave much of it away. When we were able to visit him during the summer, we always came away with wonderful fruits and vegetables from his garden. Every morning, before the sun got too hot, he would get out into his garden to weed, clear out, prune, and water his garden. He knew in order to have a good harvest much work was needed, which he was willing to do.

What Vito and countless other gardeners and farmers have done, is what Jesus is saying about branches (in him) that require pruning. As followers of Jesus we are like branches in need of pruning in order to bear more fruit. Jesus said that his disciples have already been cleansed (pruned) by his words. This removing of the unfruitful branches and the pruning or cleansing may at times be painful or cause us some discomfort, however, it is a necessary step for us to bear the fruit of God’s kingdom.

We may not fully understand about this process when it is going on, but generally later on during our pilgrimage we can see why the removal or pruning was needed. As you take part in the spiritual practices of prayer, Bible study, and reflection, may you be open to allowing God’s word and the Holy Spirit to remove, prune, and cleanse those parts of your inner being that will allow you to become the person that God wants you to be! Peace, Vernon T.

Being Purified

"But who can endure the day of his [the Lord of hosts] coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness." Malachi 3: 2–3

This passage from Malachi reminds us that part of this spiritual pilgrimage and doing the Lord’s will in our lives does include us being purified by fire and soap, which could also involve us letting go of the impurities of our inner self.

My parents were divorced, and my mother raised my brothers and me mostly on her own. I am not sure how she did it now that I am a parent, grandparent and great grandparent. However, we made it through and all became functioning adults. Hearing the words, a refiner’s fire makes me think of the times that my mother tried to purify us, so that we could be better people.

My mother did believe in the old way of thinking that at some point, when one of us was out of line, a spanking was required. I know that doing this is looked down upon in our society today, but my mother felt she needed to do that at certain times to keep us four boys out of trouble and to learn how live in our society. Of course, we did not know that at the time.

On your spiritual journey may you be receptive to the good Lord working through the Holy Spirit to purify you to become the person that God wants you to be. This will probably require change and even some pain for you, but God knows what is needed to purify and to refine you! Peace, Vernon T.

Prayer for our Government Leaders

O Lord, our governor, your glory shines throughout the world.
We commend our nation to your merciful care, that we may live securely in peace
and may be guided by your providence.
Give all in authority the wisdom and strength to know your will and to do it.
Help them remember that they are called to serve the people as lovers of truth
and justice; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Called for this Time

". . .Who knows? Perhaps you have come to royal dignity for just such a time as this." Esther 4: 14b

Sometimes we can become overwhelmed with all of the negative happenings that come into our world every day. It seems that a day does not go by that we do not hear of another story of human suffering in one form or the other. This problem could be caused by some war, accident, or natural catastrophe; no matter what is, it can cause pain to those involved with the event, or to those who have compassion for those connected to it. This could cause some of us to have a sense of hopelessness with what is going on around us and in the world. In most cases all we can only pray and offer encouragement.

Another way to look at what is going on, is that each of us has been called to live in this time and place, and we are here for a reason. We may not be able to stop most of the things that are going on that are of a negative nature. However, we can influence our own lives and to a certain extent some of the things going on around us. When our faith and hope are in the love and compassion of God and not in what other humans can offer, we can still be encouraged that this is the Lord’s world and not ours. Our prayers and concerns can change and help what is going on around us.

Please be encouraged to continue your spiritual practices so these routines can help you cope with the issues and noise that are all around us. These habits will not remove us from the pain of the world, but when we keep our focus on God’s kingdom, we know that in the end God’s love will be the only thing that will remain and that we are called to be where we presently are! Peace, Vernon T.

Our Life Lens

As we begin a new year, hopefully we can take time to reflect on how past events have shaped our lives. All of us have been changed and how we look at our lives and the life around us
is always altered.

We all have a life lens that determines how we look at every aspect of our life. The focus of our lens is developed by our life experiences; all of the things that we have been a part of, all of the people that have come into our lives, and all of the events that have happened around us impact who we are and how we see life. Our life lenses are also influenced by the spiritual practices that we take apart in while striving for God’s kingdom in this present time.

My own life lens has been developed by my upbringing by a single Mom growing up on the east side of Youngstown, Ohio. My first church community was Jerusalem Baptist church, which was made up of people of color who had come to Youngstown from the southern states to make a new and better life in the north.

My life lens was later influenced as I worked in a steel mill, went to college part time for eight years in order to earn my bachelor’s degree, married Judy, who was of the Catholic faith. Her death years later, after a long battle with cancer, caused my life lens to change radically. My many moves around the country as I worked for different insurance companies gave me more experiences. Then joining a Lutheran church and eventually going to a Lutheran seminary, and then marrying a Lutheran pastor, Shirley, continues to change my life lens.

I give my life experiences to encourage each of you to think about all of the events both large and small and all of the people that have come and gone into your lives, and reflect upon how all of these situations have gotten you to where you are today. Certainly, this past year has given us much to think about and process. We are who we are today because of what has happened to us in the past, and how we look at life through our life lenses has been formed by these experiences.

At this beginning of a new year, besides reflecting on the recent past, please also be encouraged to either begin or continue to enhance taking part in the practices of prayer, Bible study, and reflection. These habits will give your life lens the ability to see things from a spiritual aspect versus a worldly one. This may help you to better deal with the many and varied issues of life! Peace, Vernon T.

The New Year!

One of Shirley’s and my favorite spiritual writers is Henri Nouwen. He was a Catholic priest, now deceased, who was a very important writer in the last century. In his yearly devotional book “Bread for the Journey” for January eighth he writes about having light for the next step. As we begin a new year, we can become concerned about what this year holds for us, especially in the light of what all happened to us in 2024. He notes that generally we only have enough light for the coming hour or the following day.

He writes, “The art of living is to enjoy what we can see and not complain about what remains in the dark.” He goes on to say that when we can take the next step with faith, our life can be filled with joy. May you be able to trust the Lord about the future and live today with that faith. Blessings on your spiritual pilgrimage throughout the New Year!  Peace, Vernon T.
