PicturePicture is “Scene from Acts of the Apostles, after Stradanus”From Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; Artist, Jan van der Straet, called Stradanus, Flemish, 1523–1605, Public Domain
"They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. . .  Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved." Acts 2: 42-43, 46-47

This passage shows how the early Church Community functioned in the time right after Jesus’ ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit. The first few chapters of Acts give us a picture of a community that seemed to get along for the most part, and attempted to follow Jesus’ teaching.

They were open to being taught, were always in prayer, shared their material possessions, and broke bread together. They sought the will of God and looked out for each other, and out of all of these actions many joined their community. They dealt with their daily issues with prayer and a belief, that God’s love and Spirit was always with them. They also lived Day by Day!

They didn’t seem to be overly concerned about the future, for they trusted that the Lord God would take care of them. Living day by day is also a good way to live on this spiritual pilgrimage, and in the times that we are now in. Trying to figure out where God may be leading in the future can be very challenging. Most of the time all we can see is the next step on our journey.

Attempting to look too far ahead may only confuse and overwhelm us. Especially, as the world around us slowly begins to come out of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and people are becoming more aware of the Racial Injustices that have plagued us for centuries, and as we continue to mourn the loss of life with the violence all around us---taking it one a day at a time, is certainly a concern.

However, God still loves us and the entire world, and only wants the best for us. I know that fact is hard to understand some times. But God’s love never fades, and hopefully that truth can encourage us daily. I pray that you may be open to living day by day as the early church lived and trust that the Holy Spirit will guide all of your future days. Peace, Vernon T.

A New Heart and a New Spirit

“A new heart I [the Lord God] will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you, . . .” Ezekiel 36: 26-27a

In this Old Testament book, we have the priest and prophet, Ezekiel, outlining what the Lord God directed him to tell the Israelite Nation. Their hearts, that were like stone, would be turned into hearts of flesh. In Ezekiel 37 we also have the story of the “Valley of Dry Bones” and how God puts a new life into something that was dry and dead. This is an excellent story for those who want to engage in spiritual practices, for it gives us all hope about what can come from it, a new heart and new spirit.

However, for some of us during these prolonged pandemics, it may be an extremely difficult task to be open to receiving a new heart and spirit. One such time for me was when my late wife, Judy, died in late January 1999. After her funeral and all of the related activity calmed down, I can remember how depressed, lonely, and sad I was. Up until her death, I had been busy caring for her at home, and then life suddenly slowed down. During that time of the year the days were short and having to be alone during those winter evenings was especially challenging for me. There were many stressful and painful moments for me then; as I grieved her death, rested after taking care of her while she was under Hospice care, and reflected on my life without her.

I realize that many of you can relate to this given the very trying times that the entire world has been through over the recent months. However, it did take what for me seemed to be forever to begin feeling better. But spring did finally come, and by late summer my energy level did begin to improve. My heart and spirit were renewed over time. I pray that will be the case for all of us as things slowly begin to improve all around us

As you begin to part in or enhance your spiritual practices, think about reflecting on these chapters from Ezekiel as an example of how we can also be reborn. Being on our spiritual pilgrimage isn’t always a bed of roses, but we can be daily given a new heart and spirit when we are open to God’s love, grace, and mercy. Blessings on your earthly and spiritual travels!  Peace, Vernon T.

Spiritual Practices

Over the recent past all of us have had a number of things that we have had to deal with; that has added much stress to our everyday existence. Beginning with the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Racial Injustice Pandemic, all of the climate related disasters, the Presidential Election, the many mass shootings, the continued political divisions; you name it, we all have had a lot to deal with. My heart continues to go out to those who have lost loved ones, jobs or their former ways of living. There has been so much pain and sorrow!

As I have noted before, recently I have had some additional stresses that have had to be dealt with. Issues that I was also involved with were; my estranged daughter suddenly coming back into my life, however, who very sadly died six months later from a brain tumor, we had the drama with my teenage grandson when he lived with us for seven months, we also had to deal with the COVID-19 Pandemic like everyone else, then shortly after that, all of the racial injustice issues nearly did me in, then the long 2020 Presidential Campaign and Election took away whatever emotional energy I had left. Now as we move into the summer of 2021, our national political divide continues to place one side against the other, as we try and come out of the challenges that remain.

All of these experiences caused me to have some mild-moderate depression and low periods. Normally I am able to handle most things, but I really struggled to deal with this all. I tried to continue my spiritual practices, and commit and commend my spirit to the Lord. It was challenging, but I had to do this daily, in order to allow God’s Spirit to walk with me through the highs and lows that I was experiencing.

I pray that you have tried to do something similar. We have all been through a lot and sometimes we don’t see a way out of the positions that we are in. Prayer, reflection, and reading the Bible and spiritual books, and the writings of our spiritual mothers and fathers can help us make it through one day at a time. These practices, may not take us out of the pain and sorrow we are in, but it can help us take another step and attempt to move forward.

In no way am I suggesting that my ministry and books are in the same league as other well-known authors, but I offer them as a source to aid with your spiritual practices during your life journey and these trying days. My second book, Nourishment for the Spiritual Pilgrimage: Daily Devotions for Christian Disciples, is still available through Wipf and Stock Publishers. The site’s link is at the top of this page, marked Wipf & Stock. It provides an aid for those who want to participate in the spiritual pilgrimage of becoming a lifelong disciple of Jesus Christ. There are countless other daily devotionals, but hopefully this can offer something that many of the others may not, a specific focus on the concept of discipleship and one’s spiritual practices.

My first book, Discipleship---A Lifelong Spiritual Pilgrimage is on also on sale through Wipf & Stock, note the link at the top of this page. This small book offers guidance and gives support to those already involved in this pilgrimage, plus encouragement to those wanting to do more in developing good discipleship practices. Both books are also available through Amazon.com. Besides being offered in hard copies they are offered in eBook and Kindle Editions as well.

My prayer is that these books and other sources will be a helpful resource to those who read them, as we all strive to get through all of these pandemics, while attempting to stay connected to God’s Spirit. Peace, Vernon T.

Immediately

“As (Jesus) went from there, he saw two other brothers, James, son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.” Matthew 4: 21-22

This passage is used to show that if Jesus calls someone to follow him or to take a certain path on this spiritual journey, he may be asking that it be done immediately; and not in months or years later. When I was thinking about going to the seminary, I had thought about going part time for a year, and continuing to work in the insurance industry, before going full time. I had gone to undergraduate school part time while working full time in the steel mill. I thought that was the practical thing to do again. However, again God had other plans.

I talked to my pastor, Dave Shugert, about my thoughts, and from things he did, plus other signs I was given the clear message for me was to go full time and not to wait for a year. Thus, I quit a career that I had invested nearly twenty-eight years in, had benefits and job security, and one that I knew pretty well. Also, I left a year before I would have had enough time in with that company to actually retire from it. Didn’t make a lot of sense; but I went to Trinity Lutheran Seminary at that point, not knowing why I was going, only that I was meant to go.

That ended being a really good thing for me, because if I had gone part time versus full time, I wouldn’t have met and got to know Shirley Ross, and wouldn’t have gotten married to her. Sometimes being practical is not what God is calling us to do, but taking a leap of faith immediately to follow Jesus or to take an unknown path; may be the message. Again, may you be open to listening to where God may be leading you! Peace, Vernon T.
