A Prayer for Discernment

"Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart to revere your name.” Psalm 86: 11

Discernment comes to us in many forms, and often comes in ways that may be hard for us to see. We are all called by God to fulfill some part to bring about God’s kingdom into our present time. We all have certain gifts and talents that others do not have, and thus it is important for all of us to seek how those talents should be used and set about using them. A prayer like this verse, is a good one to use to begin looking for how your gifts might be used.

My late wife, Judy, went into a Catholic Religious Order to become a sister right after high school. She joined the Humility of Mary Order (often called the Blue Nuns), for that is what she thought God was calling her to do at that moment. She felt that being a sister was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. This Order taught her in school and she became very close with them.

She was in the Order for more than two years, and that period was a very good one for her, for she grew spiritually and in many other ways. However, as time went on, she knew that this was not what she was called to do for the rest of her life. She left the Order, but she continued to discern her call as a disciple of Christ and continued to use her talents. Besides helping our family and me grow in our faith she also was deeply involved in Christian education in her local parish. Her entire life became a witness of God’s love to those around her and she discerned God’s call throughout her life

Discernment comes to all of us daily. May you be open to where it may be leading you; it could take you to places that are totally new and different for you! Peace, Vernon T.

Trust in the Lord

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3: 5-6

This is one of my favorite Bible verses, which has helped me over the years. I have memorized Bible verses to help me cope with the challenges of life. While traveling in my insurance marketing job, (before going to the seminary) I would write a verse on an old business card and then place it on my car dash. This helped me try to keep a positive-faithful outlook as I went from one agency visit to another. These verses were there to help with my attitude.

Later on, I would write Bible verses on a white board in my office for my support, but it also helped others who saw it. Thus, memorizing and reciting Bible verses are very much who I am and help me keep my focus on God's kingdom and this spiritual pilgrimage. Think of doing something similar to assist you on your faith journey and in the trying times that we are now living in. Peace, Vernon T.

The Lord’s Help

"Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord guards the city, the guard keeps watch in vain." Psalm 127:1

My late wife, Judy, did a cross stitch with the first half of this verse on it. She did it many years ago, and even after several moves and my remarriage it still found a place on my walls.

When Judy and I were first married, we had many of the same challenges that young couples have, with a few more stressful ones thrown in. We felt that we had to include the Lord in our marriage as much as possible in order to make it. Having this verse on our walls helped keep God always before us; we were fortunate and blessed to have been married for twenty-eight years when she passed away. May scriptures and faith-filled books/sayings help you when you have stressful times. Blessings to you and your family. Peace, Vernon T.

LOVE---TRUTH---JUSTICE---RIGHTEOUS

Continue to pray for and strongly implore the White House, Congress, Federal-State-Local Governments, and our Judicial Systems to govern through the lens of love, truth, justice and righteous.

“Those who say, ‘I love God’ and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.” I John 4: 20-21

“For thus says the Lord of hosts…These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another, render in your gates judgements that are true and make for peace, do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and love no false oath; for all these are things that I hate, says the Lord.” Zechariah 8: 14a, 16-17

“But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Amos 5: 24

Peace, Vernon T.

A Vision for the Appointed Time

"Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay." Habakkuk 2: 2-3

One of areas that constantly cause me strain is that I generally hate to wait! Sometimes I can deal with it, but I mostly want to get moving, get on with the task, get it done! Of course, our society does not help with this issue; as we want and have instant everything, and when we (yes also Vernon T.) cannot have it, we wonder why!

However, spiritual writers and the scriptures tell us that following the spiritual pilgrimage comes without a clock or stopwatch. We are told to wait for God’s vision, even when we cannot see what we are waiting for. In my own journey that has been one of the more challenging aspects of this process.

When you have moments of doubt, that things are not going fast enough, try to remember that God’s time frame is not ours and the vision comes at the Lord’s appointed time. Blessings on your waiting periods! Peace, Vernon T.

“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not seek so much to
be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.” Amen

All Things Pass Away Except God

 “Let nothing disturb you. Let nothing make you afraid. All things are passing. God alone never changes. Patience gains all things. If you have God you will want for nothing. God alone suffices.” Saint Teresa of Avila

Saint Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) founded the Discalced Carmelites and became the first woman to be named Doctor of the Church. She was a very gifted writer, and wrote a number of spiritual classics. Her spiritual teachings were based on a life of prayer. (This prayer was taken from “Let Nothing Disturb You---Teresa of Avila” Series Editor, John Kirvan, Ave Maria Press, 2008)

Many years ago, I learned a form of this prayer. It became one of a number of mantras, that has been used over the years, to help me get through some of life’s more stressful moments. What I have used was this shorten version: “Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things will pass away except God; God alone is sufficient.” No matter which version you reflect on, they hold some important concepts for any time, but especially in these very trying times that we are going through today.

Saint Teresa had a number of challenges that she had to deal with in her life, but she used her prayer routines to help her get through them. She was able to state with some assurance that everything in life passed away except the Lord God. That God alone was sufficient, and that nothing else was needed.

During these nation-wide challenges may you be able to reflect upon, and realize this same understanding. Please be open to using prayers like this one, and the wisdom gained from past and present spiritual saints, to help you make it another day. Please be well and as sane as you can be, and blessings be to you and your family! Peace, Vernon T.
