Blessing the Lord Even in These Times!

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name, Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits.” Psalm 103:1-2

Blessing the Lord comes from our acknowledgment that everything we have is a gift of God. In the midst of all of our Pandemics, and all of the challenges that we and in fact the entire world are facing, sometimes it is hard to bless the Lord. It takes more effort for all of us to find a blessing in these moments of stress and pain. However, I believe that as this verse notes, God wants us to try and look for those times that are a blessing, even if they are small ones.

From the pictures with some of my postings you can tell that I love sunsets and sunrises. These are wonderful times to bless the Lord. Shirley and I lived in Alpena, Michigan, when she served as pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church. The city was right on the bay reaching out to Lake Huron. We both loved seeing the sun and how it made wonderful sights on that great body of water. Sometimes it could take your breath away, and cause one to think, WOW! I tried to visit the bay whenever I could, and no matter how many times I saw it---it always looked different.

We are also able to live in the greater Louisville, KY area when Shirley was pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church there. We both enjoyed walking the Riverfront area which had been developed along the Ohio River, which was very awesome and again, always looked different. Additionally, with my late, Judy, we lived in the Bay area of Northern California, and a number of places in the Midwest, and there were always sights, sunsets, and sunrises, that were so lovely and again changed with the seasons. Now Shirley and I live in the greater Denver area, and the Rocky Mountains can take one’s breath away. In all of these places, we have had many reasons to bless the Lord!

As we get caught up in the challenges of life that impact us all, it is easy to go right by views like these. But when we are able to stop a moment, slow down, and take in the scene, we can begin to bless the Lord, right then and there.

Moreover, we can also bless the Lord anytime during the day for small happenings. Things like seeing a baby take it first’s steps, witnessing an act of kindness, or realizing that if we were able to get out of bed this morning---that could be a miracle that many others may not be able to achieve. I would challenge each of you to find ways during your day to bless the Lord, even when you didn’t feel like it, or have to look long and hard to do so. This blessing can aid you in your spiritual pilgrimage. Peace! Vernon T.

Scripture Reflection: Looking Ahead

“Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’” Luke 9: 62

Because of what the entire world has experienced over the past year, with all of our Pandemics, some of us may be spending time looking back at what we have been through, versus looking forward into a more spiritual/positive future.

In Luke 9: 57-62 we have a few people who want to follow Jesus, apparently because of the miracles he has done. Jesus was becoming a rock star, and many wanted to be near him because he was doing things that no one else had been able to do. However, he had to get them to think about what they were asking of him. Their focus was on what he did; not on who he was. He told them what the focus needed to be in order to follow him. Jesus said that when someone wanted to be his disciple, one is turned toward Jesus and the kingdom of God, versus how one used to live, or what the secular world had to offer

Such is the case with anything we want to achieve in our life, and certainly as we move away from the challenging times that we have all recently faced. There are times that we may have to give up something from the past, or from the human world in order to move toward God’s will in our lives. May you be open to looking ahead toward God’s kingdom in your life, versus the things of our recent past, or those things which may be holding you back from becoming the person that God wants you to be. Please be safe and sane, Vernon T.

Scripture Reflection: Love One Another

“Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind.” I Peter 3: 8

There is a lot of meaning in this little verse. When I think of loving one another with a tender heart and a humble mind, I think of many people: but Vito Buonavolonta, often comes to mind first. Vito has my late wife’s father. He lived most of his adult life in Ashtabula, Ohio, on Lake Erie. He worked on the docks there, dealing with the many large ships that came in to unload their cargo there. He was a very hard-working man, with very little formal education. His parents and those of his wife Stella were born in Italy, but came to the United States to find a better life. His character was formed by his upbringing. However, in my mind, the love he showed on a daily basis was formed out of his strong faith and his love for his God.

To some he might have come off as a tough person on the outside. However, for me after some initial challenges between us, he was a wonderful example of someone who loved with a tender heart and humble mind. His very life embodied this verse: and how he lived and what he showed me continues to impact my life. May your spiritual practices allow you to be open to living a life which embraces these traits. May the love of God grow in your heart and soul and may that love be shared with those you meet today and always. Blessings on your spiritual travels! Peace! Vernon T.

Personal Reflection: Life’s Miracles

2/4/2021

My late wife, Judy, passed away after a lengthy struggle with brain tumors. After her second surgery she couldn’t talk, walk, or move her right side. After several months of rehab, she regained some functions, only to slowly lose them again prior to her death. During that period, I began reflecting more and more about how the human body is created, grows, and operates. I came to believe that many things can’t be explained, and were only miracles of life, and God’s gift to us humans.

For me, seeing the miracles of life and creation----carried over into other areas such as; the changes of the seasons with all of its different colors and varieties, a beautiful sunrise or sunset, and the birth and development of a child. Having been fortunate enough in my new blended/extended family to again be around babies and young children, has only reinforced this sense of awe about all of God’s creation.

There are so many miracles in life that can’t be described in human terms, but only experienced and enjoyed. Even in these very stressful times of all of our Pandemics; I pray that you are willing and open to seeing the daily miracles of life that God has created for us to take delight in. Peace, Vernon T.
