Gathered in Prayer

"For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them" Matthew 18: 20

Jesus wants us to pray individually and with others. Where two or three are gathered in Jesus’ name, Jesus will be there also. In this passage he is talking about how to deal with issues coming up in the church, however, one could also state that Jesus is among us whenever we are gathered in his name and trying to do his will.

I have been very fortunate to have been part of a number of Christian communities over my lifetime. They all have contributed to my spiritual growth and have been a part of the ups and downs of my life and that of my family. Of course, no community is perfect and at times some of them have caused my family and me pain. However, like most things in life if something is important to us then we try to work through the difficult times in hopes of them getting better. Thus, since I can remember my family and I have always taken part in regular worship services wherever we lived. Over the years I have been a part of an American Baptist Church, two Roman Catholic Churches and several Lutheran (ELCA) Churches in six different states.

I realize others may view being in a community in a different light. You may have been a part of a very difficult or challenging situation from being connected to a community and may have been hurt because of it. That happened to my Mother, when I was a young teenager. For a while she was given a very hard time for something that was going on in her life. She felt that she was doing the right thing but others in the community thought otherwise. Even though it was very painful for a while, she stayed there and continued to worship with that same community. Over time things got somewhat better, and she remained in that church until she passed away.

If you are already involved with a spirit-filled community, please continue to allow them to be a part of your spiritual journey. If you don’t have one, may this verse encourage you to pray for guidance about finding one and then becoming an active part of the worship practices and the mission of the body of Christ. For when people are gathered in prayer, there is Jesus also! Peace, Vernon T.

"Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long." Psalm 25: 4-5

In 2000, after spending nearly twenty-eight years in the insurance industry, I left that field to start Trinity Lutheran Seminary full time. I was guided to go while not fully knowing why. Initially that experience was a shock to my spiritual and mental makeup.

Over my lifetime I had always attended worship services wherever we lived. I took part in countless Bible studies, Sunday school activities as a teacher and a student, in small group activities, and of course did my own private study as part of my spiritual pilgrimage. However, that period at Trinity traumatized my system in many ways and especially as far as my knowledge of the Bible went. Even though I felt comfortable with my knowledge of certain things before going to the Trinity, my view of some aspects of scripture was forever changed.

That first year at Trinity, and especially that first quarter was one of the more trying times that I have ever had in my life. Beside the workload and the writing of paper after paper, it really caused me a lot of pain and discomfort for what I was learning changed a part some of the long-held beliefs that I had about the Bible, its stories, and the background about some of its history. That became a very stressful time for me, many things that I once held very sacredly were drastically altered.

As you take part in your spiritual practices realize that you can be taught different aspects about your journey, and be open to learning that on this walk, there will always be something new to learn, or a fresh way to see a long-held view. Please be aware that this may indeed change you and could even cause you some discomfort. However, embrace what God may be doing in your life! Peace, Vernon T.

Making a Home Wherever We Are Sent

"Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce." Jeremiah 29: 5

This passage is taken from when the God of Israel, through the prophet Jeremiah, told the people living in exile in Babylon how they were supposed to live. They weren’t to act as exiles but were to fully embrace the area and people that they were now with. God indeed had future plans for them, as noted later in this chapter. However, at that point they were to build homes and plant gardens.

Now I wasn’t ever in exile in a foreign land, but I have moved a number of times as an adult. After finishing college my late wife, Judy, and my family made several corporate moves. During that time, I worked for five insurance companies in four states, in two of these states I lived in two different cities. After I left the insurance industry and went to the Seminary, I moved to two brand-new states to where Shirley was called as pastor. After Shirley retired, we made one big move (hopefully the last one) to Colorado.

Some of the moves where longer than others, but in all of them I tried to make myself and my family at home, and we settled into the community. We bought houses, put in yards and tried to make wherever we lived our home. We also took advantage of the surrounding area to visit on vacation as well as taking in all of the interesting aspects of the town/area that we lived in.

Part of the concept about discernment on this spiritual pilgrimage is living in the moment and trusting the future to God. That is what the Lord was telling the Israel nation that even though they were in exile they were to build homes, live in them and plant gardens; to basically settle down.

You may not be called to move to a new location as you listen to God’s direction and discernment, however you may be asked to try something new, or take on a different ministry role. No matter what it is, take it seriously and embrace the new adventure and live in the moment, knowing that God has a future plan for you! Peace, Vernon T.

Scriptures Gives Us Hope

"For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope." Romans 15: 4

After high school I went to work in a steel mill in my hometown, Youngstown, Ohio. During that time, I started to read positive thinking books to help with my low self-esteem. I read a number of them and began to use some of the methods and ideas that they expressed. There were a number of good life lessons in those books which were important to learn. They did begin to help me and gave me confidence that I didn’t previously have. I will always be grateful for what they taught me and how they influenced my life.

However, over the years scripture began to take on an important role in my life and journey. These books could only help me so much, and more were needed from a support and learning standpoint. The wisdom and insight gained about the spiritual and physical pilgrimage from the study of the Bible far exceeded what was gained from reading positive thinking books. That is how it was for me.

I would encourage you to daily seek God’s word in order to gain insight and wisdom on this spiritual walk. Scripture is meant to encourage us and give us hope about the future and the promises of our Lord God! Peace, Vernon T.

We All Have Different Gifts

"For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: . . ." Romans 12: 4-6

The lesson in this passage is also outlined in other passages in the Bible. They basically state that all of us are called to fulfill different roles in God’s ministry and mission in this time and place, according to the grace given to us. Just as the human body has different parts that function and carry out their duties the body of Christ is the same way. We are all called and given different gifts to use in our various roles.

The written use of the English language is not one of my strongest suits. I have been challenged in this, and the first class I took in college was Communications 105, a basic English course, which I failed and had to retake. This an area which I continue to struggle with and always need help in.

However, the good Lord has gifted me with many people who have helped me with my short comings. My late wife, Judy, was really good in this area and helped me with my college papers and written correspondence afterward college. Shirley is also very good in this and has been a big help with my Seminary papers, sermons, and other publications. Thus, these two have used their talents to help me in life and to fulfill my role as called by God. In the same manner I have helped both of them, and continue to help Shirley, with skills that they didn’t have so that their ministries could be enhanced, and in life with gifts that the other didn’t have.

Please be open to where you are being called and listen for the discerning voice of the Holy Spirit, which daily offers guidance as to what is needed next in the body of Christ. God allows our skills and gifts to be used in areas that are needed and not being met by others in the community! Peace, Vernon T.
