Holy Week and Easter

3/27/2021

Monday is Palm Sunday, and for some of the churches in American, (like ours) there will be no in person Palm processions. Many worshiping communities have had to live-stream or use Facebook, or some other method to connect with their members. This crisis has altered so many activities that we once took for granted.

Normally many liturgical churches would be having a number of extra in person worship services next week leading up to Easter. For some Christians, Easter is the most holy day of the church year. For some, sadly those in person Easter services, will not be held. Since I am married to a retired Lutheran (ELCA) pastor, I know how busy this week could usually be. However, I grew up in an American Baptist Church in Youngstown, Ohio, and for us Holy Week, didn’t have a lot of extra services. But Easter morning was a huge day for us.

Jerusalem Baptist Church was made of persons of Color, who had mainly come from the Southern States to find work up North. They were mostly blue-collar working people, who loved getting dressed up for Sunday worship. However, on Easter morning, they took getting dressed up to another level. Most everyone, got something new and lovely for the worship service. The hats, dresses, and suits were so colorful, and often people tried to outdo each other.

Looking back many years later, I wonder, if the resurrection of Jesus on Easter, took a back seat to the clothes worn on that day. I am sure we weren’t the only church to do this. With that being said, no matter what your faith traditions were years ago or are today; not being able to worship as a community in person during this time, will be hard for all of us. I know for Shirley and I; we dearly miss being able to worship together as a community.

I would encourage all of you, to try and realize that the resurrection of Jesus and the new birth that event brings into our lives---happens daily, when we are open to it. The love that our Lord God has for all us as shown in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, is still there, regardless if we can worship in person on Palm Sunday, during Holy Week, or on Easter.

Acknowledging that this is a very stressful time for the entire world, still with many unknowns, with lots of pain for those impacted by the virus, with tons of additional effort by governments and medical personnel to contain the virus and to get everyone vaccinated; hopefully you are able to pause, and reflect at some point during this time, about the wonderful gift given to humanity by our loving Lord. Even if you are unable to personally attend services, try to look for areas of love and hope around you so that Easter can come to you, in more moments/days then just April 4, 2021. May God’s love and grace, bless you and your families/loved ones at this time. Peace, Vernon T.

A Prayer at a Time of Tragedy

As we mourn the loss of human life again, so soon after so many other lives have been cut short, with so many families impacted; it is so hard to get our heads and hearts around all of it. The most any of us can do is to weep and pray. So, we weep, mourn, and pray:

“God of compassion, you watch our ways, and weave out of terrible happenings wonders of goodness and grace.
Surround those who have been shaken by tragedy with a sense of your present love, and hold them in faith.
Though they are lost in grief, may they find you and be comforted; through Jesus Christ who was dead, but lives and rules this world with you. Amen”

The New Jerusalem

Arise, shine, for your light has come; and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you,
though darkness covers the earth and dark night is over the nations.
But upon you the Lord will rise, and the glory of the Lord will appear over you.
Nations shall come to your light; and rulers to the brightness of your dawn.
No longer will violence be heard in your land nor ruin or destruction within your borders.
You will name your walls Salvation, and all your gates Praise.
No more will the sun be your light by day, nor by night will you need the brightness of the moon,
for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
Isaiah 60: 1-3, 18, 19

Laying Aside

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weigh and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith . . .” Hebrews 12:1-2a

In Hebrews chapter 11 we heard about all of the people who acted by faith, and Hebrews chapter12 reminds us that these people are great witnesses for us. That we should try and follow their example, and leave behind those things in our lives that are barriers to becoming the persons that God wants us to be. This laying aside or leaving behind isn’t a one-time event, but an hourly/daily one. During the trying times that we are in, with the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Racial Injustice Pandemic, our Climatic Issues, and our political divides; we as a nation and as individuals, are being asked to rethink how we will live in the future. We will, in fact, have to lay aside some of our past habits.

This laying aside, could be physical, emotional, or mental aspects of your life. When I was in the corporate world, I changed jobs every now and then, as I looked forward to a better position for my family and I. Sometimes that new position required me to physically move my family to a new location. Of course, there were always good and less then good aspects to making this happen. We got to see different parts of the country, but also had to leave homes we liked, and friends we had made along the way. However, in order to take the new position, choices had to be made in order to make that happen. We had to lay aside our old way of living in order to be able to embrace the new future.

You may not be led by the Holy Spirit to physically move while taking part in your spiritual journey. However, it seems certain, that in some way or fashion, you will be asked to change, either emotionally or mentally. It has been often noted, that if you don’t want to change don’t pray to God. For by taking part in the routines of prayer, Bible study, and reflection, that at some point, you will be given the direction to lay aside something of your prior life.

On your pilgrimage may your spiritual practices give you the hope, discernment, and courage you need to run your race and lay aside those past things in your life, while keeping your focus on where God wants to direct you. Peace! Vernon T.

Intercession for Lent

3/15/2021

Jesus, remember us when you come into your kingdom.
Hear our intercessions.

For your church around the world,
we ask new life.
For all who carry out ministries in your church,
we ask grace and wisdom.
For people who have accepted spiritual disciplines,
we ask inspired discipleship.
For Christians of every land,
we ask new unity in your name.
For Jews and Muslims and people of other faiths
we ask your divine blessing.
For those who cannot believe,
we ask your faithful love.
For governors and rulers in every land,
we ask your guidance,
For people who suffer and sorrow,
we ask your healing peace.

Holy God, your Word, Jesus Christ, spoke peace to a sinful world and brought humanity the gift of reconciliation by the suffering and death he endured. Teach those who bear his name to follow the example he gave us. May our faith, hope, and charity turn hatred to love, conflict to peace, and death to eternal life; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

By Faith

“By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac.” Hebrews 11:17

Read Hebrews 11:17-28 for many examples of acts of faith. This passage records the faith of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Moses. Many of these verses begin with the words, “By Faith.” As you reflect on this passage, think about times in your lives when you were called to act by faith, and not on your own sight. During these very trying times of our National Pandemics, this walking by faith can take an entire new meaning.

One of these prior times for me was when I left the insurance industry after nearly twenty-eight years to enter the seminary; that was totally an act that was done by me “by faith.” I was doing fine with my career, had a good wage, with benefits; and could have stayed there as long as I wanted to. I had learned a lot about that industry and I felt comfortable with what I was doing. Additionally, I wasn’t old enough to retire. I didn’t fully know why I was being directed to go, and I had no idea what I was going to do, once I finished the course work. However, through a number of signs and people’s direction it was pretty clear, that God wanted me to enter Trinity Lutheran Seminary in the fall of 2000. Sometimes we are asked to move out in faith, not knowing what will come next, only that we are guided to take that next step.

Traveling on this spiritual pilgrimage takes courage and strength. However, this courage and strength come from our relationship from God through Jesus Christ, and this relationship is developed over time as we strive for God’s kingdom. Blessings on your spiritual travels and may you be open to taking steps by faith, and not always by sight. Peace! Vernon T.

A Cry for Help

3/4/2021

“Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am . . . The Lord will guide you continually . . .” Isaiah 58: 9, 11a

This passage definitely shows that when we call out to the Lord for help, God will hear us and guide us. However, from the wisdom and writings handed down by our desert mothers and fathers this guidance and help; may not come in the time frame or manner that we want or would hope for. An answer may be slow in coming; especially in this time of a global pandemic, which has impacted all of our daily routines. However, that doesn’t mean that God isn’t there nor has forgotten us.

As humans we are always in a hurry to get things done, in our action-packed 24 hour a day society that we live in, waiting for anything---just doesn’t cut it. When we can instantly hear about what is happening around the world, and when we can find out detailed information about just any topic in seconds; why oh why would we ever want to wait on some kind of answer from our prayers?

Walking this spiritual pilgrimage doesn’t guarantee that we will get everything that we ask for or want; when we want it. But the trek can increase our faith to allow us to keep moving forward, even when things are a little cloudy or appears to be slow at the moment. “The Lord guiding us continually,” --- may be done so quietly that we may have a hard time understanding it or realizing it, but that doesn’t mean that the guidance and support isn’t there. Patience and persistence are important aspects of our life’s walk and our spiritual journey. Peace! Vernon T.
