“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” John 6: 27

Happy Thanksgiving! I pray that you and your family have a great holiday, and can enjoy the many wonderful things that come with it. At some point reflect on the many things that you have to be thankful for; and realize that there are many all around us that are less fortunate then we are. Many are struggling for any number of reasons; especially during these times of the Pandemics that are causing so much pain.

When we think of others that don’t have what we have been blessed to have, or have the good health that we have, that may allow us to even be more grateful for where we are. It may be also, allow us to be more appreciative of the small gifts of life, that are all around us that we often miss; when we are too hung up on all of the material stuff that society and mass media throws our way.

Also reflect on these words from the Gospel of John, where the only thing that will last into the next life is God’s love, and what is done for God’s kingdom.

May God’s peace and love be with you and your family! Vernon T., Shirley, and our blended/extended family.

Prayer for Thanksgiving for Heroes and Heroines of the Faith

Eternal and Almighty God,
we give you thanks for all your faithful people
who have followed your will in a grand procession of praise
throughout the world and down through the centuries,
into our own time and place.
We hear their stories in the pages of scripture,
in the records of history, in the recollections of our families
and in our own childhood memories.
As we remember these people, inspire us by your Spirit to join their ranks
and follow our Lord through life, to be bold as they were, and brave as well,
witnessing to your righteous truth and generous love.
Give us grace, O God, that we will leave a legacy of faithfulness
to encourage and challenge those who follow us along the way of discipleship;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Healing (Especially in our Global COVID-19 Pandemic)

Mighty and merciful God,
you sent Jesus Christ to heal broken lives.
We praise you that today you send healing in doctors and nurses,
and bless us with technology in medicine.
We claim your promises of wholeness as we pray for those who are
ill in body or mind, who long for your healing touch.
Make the weak strong, the sick healthy, the broken whole,
and confirm those who serve them as agents of your love.
Then all shall be renewed in vigor to point to the risen Christ,
who conquered death that we might live eternally. Amen.

Loving God,
you want us to give thanks for all things,
to fear nothing except losing you,
and to lay all our cares on you,
knowing that you care for us.
Protect us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties,
and grant that no clouds in this mortal life
may hide from us the light of your immortal love
shown to us in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Scripture Reflection: God’s Spirit of Power and Love

“For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self -discipline.” 2 Timothy 1: 7

God doesn’t want us to live a life of dread and fear, but a spirit that allows us to become the persons that God created us to be. The author wants Timothy and us today, to not be afraid, for God’s Spirit of power and love will be with him and us. We don’t have to let the issues of life keep us down indefinitely; with God’s Spirit, our fears can be overcome.

As fallible human beings we can’t help but sometimes have concerns and nervous moments, which comes from living on this side of God’s Kingdom. Also, we are fearful because of being in these very trying times of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Racial Injustice Pandemic, the nation’s political divisions, and the climate catastrophes; all of which have impacted so many in our country. There are a lot of unknowns during these stressful times, and many of us have had many moments to be fearful about.

However, God’s Spirit of faith and love can help us overcome our worries, fears, and doubts. We can find ways to make it another day; through prayer, reflection, and Bible study; and with the encouragement of those around us who are supportive and loving to us. Then we can begin to move into a position, where we can hear the Holy Spirit’s guidance in our lives. Blessings on your journey! Please-please continue to be safe, well, and sane! Vernon T.

Eternal God, you call us to ventures of which we cannot see the ending,
by paths as yet untrodden,
through perils unknown.
Give us faith to go out with courage,
not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us
and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Give me, O Lord, a steadfast heart, which no unworthy affection may drag downward;
give me an unconquered heart which no tribulation can wear out;
give me an upright heart, which no unworthy purpose may tempt aside.
Bestow on me also, O Lord my God,
understanding to know you,
diligence to seek you,
wisdom to find you,
and a faithfulness that may finally embrace you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
