For a few years it has been a tradition at St. Paul to hold a community Blue Christmas service during Advent. The purpose of the Blue Christmas service is to provide a setting in which it is acknowledged that for many people the Christmas season can be a time of struggle, loneliness, or even depression because of all types of losses and situations in their lives. There are prayers, songs, and a sermon given focused on those experiencing loss during this time.
During this service those who want to may list on a blue sheet of paper the item(s) that they are dealing with this holiday season, which will be placed into a basket on the altar to be prayed over for the entire Advent season. Also, a candle may be offered up in the memory of someone or for that situation that some may be dealing with. This is a small way of honoring the fact that even during this time of the year many people are struggling.
If you are in the greater Alpena, MI area and have experienced a loss of any type please come to this service. It will be held on Sunday, December 11, at 4:00 P.M. at St. Paul, 727 S.
