When Shirley and I got married in 2002, Psalm 37 was one of the readings that were chosen for our worship service. This Psalm holds a lot of meaning for both of us, and we knew that we needed the Lord to be with us on this new adventure.
We both started Trinity Lutheran Seminary in the fall of 2000, and hadn’t known each before that. We had many things in common, like both losing spouses due to death, and we both had a son and daughter with our late spouses. However, when we decided to get married, we had other challenges facing us, such as not knowing what was going to happen when Shirley finished Trinity Seminary in 2004 with her Master of Divinity degree.
She had to receive a call from a church in order to be ordained as a Lutheran pastor. This call could come from almost anywhere, and we would have to move to where ever that call was. This process contained a lot of unknows, and required a lot of faith to continue on this path. We were also starting over after being single, and after having long and very good marriages with our late spouses. Plus, we had all of the other normal challenges when folks start out with a new relationship.
Thus, we knew that to begin this new adventure, the Lord had to uphold us when we stumbled, for we surely would have our trials. However, this new adventure took us to neat places that we had never lived before, like; Louisville KY, and Alpena MI, and allowed to visit wonderful new places like Venice, Italy, among many other places.
May this passage help you if you are about to enter a new stage or adventure in your life’s journey. The Lord will hold all of us by the hand, when we stumble, and will not allow us to fall headlong! This has been especially so as we have walked over the past fourteen months with all of our pandemics. Peace, Vernon T.
